Massive Pelican Rookery at Kilcowera Station Outback QLD

Lake Wyara has been slowly filling over the last 12 months and while it is no
where near full it has sufficient water in it to entice many thousands of
pelicans back to breed. Up to 6000 birds have made the western side of Lake
Wyara home and are nesting in numbers not seen for many years.

Pelican numbers and breeding sites were down in 2007 so it is encouraging to
see such great numbers breeding in safety in inland Australia. It is a truly
memorable sight and sound in this remote location on the eastern boundary of
Kilcowera Station.

In the past the RAMSAR listed Lake Wyara has supported huge populations of
pelicans, black swans, cormorants, terns, ducks and many other species and
right now is no exception. Lake Numalla to the east of Wyara is full again
after a prolonged dry period and both lakes together form part of an inland
route for migratory birds. At least 10 species of migrants have been recorded
at the lakes.
