I've bought several sets of binoculars and a scope from bintel in Sydney. It
is an excellent shop and being able to try before you buy is, of course,
critical with bins.

However, I recently purchased a Nikon 200-400 f/4 and bought from an
overseas retailer. I paid 10% GST and some other customs fees (but nowhere
5% - which I've never heard of). It ended up being about $4K cheaper than
buying locally).

So yes, support local vendors where you can, but sometimes that's just not
economically rational.
