I have to nominate Mildura Waste Water Treatment plant. This comprises a
large area of natural mallee woodland, plus plantation eucalypts, plus some
open "paddock" area - all surrounding a sizable lagoon - approx. 800m by
150m on average.
While access is currently pretty restricted, I have spent five or six
solitary trips in there of between three and four hours. Every time I have
recorded over 55 species and have a total species count for the plant of
over 70.
As well as regular Freckled (over 200 on my first visit), Blue-billed,
Shoveller and Musk ducks and all the regular waterbirds, a few migratory
waders find their way there and there is also an excellent range of woodland
birds and raptors. The Murray River is less than 100 metres from the lagoon
at one point and the plant is also bordered by extensive mallee bush on two
sides.
The whole plant is intended to be included in the proposed Barkindji
Biosphere and there are plans to then provide a publicly accessible
boardwalk and bird hides.
I currently live less than 200m from one end of the plant and delight in
including the sewage plant in my "home list" which now stands at 116.
This is a beauty!!

G'day to all,
I am currently working on a piece for publication about sewage farms around
Australia in which, among other things I am planning to list my top ten from
around the country. Swan Hill, Darwin, Broome, Alice Springs and of course
Werribee, are just some of the contenders on my list. I was wondering what
other birders thought. What is your favorurite sewage farm? It doesn't have
to be one of the biggies. I've had some great birding experiences in small,
one pond farms in outback towns so I'd be interested in hearing about any
and all of them.
You can respond to the list or to me privately and maybe if I get enough
responses I might tabulate a list of the top ten of Birding-aus members.
