Many thanks to all those who sent congratulations.
I believe I have replied to all of you who wrote more, except to the one
mentioned below. One of the topics raised was what's a 'lister' or
'twitcher' and my guess is that like so many things there is a continuum and
a 'twitcher' is someone further along the continuum from you unless you are
rejoicing in the term being applied to you. Gary Davidson from Canada keeps
detailed spreadsheets because that is his nature. He seldom chases rare
birds and vagrants are of little interest to drag him out yet he can almost
instantly tell me the number of birds seen in the continents he has visited.
He has call himself a spreadsheet birder but I am not sure that is a
wonderful term either. [I now see that while I was writing this Philip V.
has made similar comments.]
There are so many ways to enjoy wild birds: twitching, spotting, feeding,
studying, reporting on and photographing, and all those people involved are
potential allies in our personal quests. While there may be certain
behaviours which would be best called out and condemned I hope we can do
this while still respecting the person involved. I am grateful for all the
wonderful people I have met through this hobby and many of them through this
list so thanks to Russell and his fellow moderators.
Regards,
Alan
