Some of the more senior correspondents to birding-aus will remember bumping
into Col Lloyd in one obscure birding spot or another. Col had the bins
pushed into his hands in the 1960's by his wife Ali and his old mates from
Sydney Bushwalkers, George and Marie Dibley. Over the years watching,
photographing and talking birds replaced engineering as his life's passion
and wader counts, QOS campouts, complex itineraries to the Pribiloffs or the
Falklands replaced the logistics of bushwalking. Col's last twitch was an
amble up Anstead Forest Park near his home in Brisbane in June to see the
usual suspects of Orioles, Red-backed Wrens and the circling Bazas. From his
hospital room he could just make out the lapwings scouting the pebbles on
the roof of the next door building - at 91 his last tick. Vale Col Lloyd,
you have done your last twitch.
