Birdline North Queensland

Published sightings for the week ending 3 Aug 2014.
Sat 2 Aug Swamp Harrier Culvert 43 Mulligan Highway near the Osprey nest
on Lake Mitchell
A pair seen flying at or below treetop level around the swamp while the
Osprey was tending its nest. One Swamp Harrier was chased away when they
landed in a low tree. Sighting was about 1145am.

  Pied Monarch Volk Rd, Mutarnee
Very active pair found about halfway along Volk Road - proved difficult to
photograph as they scrambled around tree trunks, etc. This followed an
early dawn - being awoken by the "chop, chop" of the local Large-tailed
Nightjar which we tracked down for good views - within the grounds of the
caravan park here.

Tue 29 Jul Spotted Harrier Thuringowa Central - near Weir School
This afternoon at about 2:45pm as I was driving outbound along Ross River
Road, where just past the Bamford Lane Intersection,
(19°18'49"S:146°44'20E) a solitary, beautiful Spotted Harrier slowly passed
directly in front of me from Right to Left at about 3metres elevation and
continued its leisurely flight through the park before the Weir School. I
had brief but wonderfully close views of this magnificent bird, totally
unexpected but unmistakable with its heavily-barred black and white under
tail and under-wing primaries and secondaries. It definitely had no white
rump. I could not have confused it with Swamp Harrier. I have never
previously seen a Spotted Harrier in Townsville "suburbia" (No Photo - I
was driving)

Mon 28 Jul Pictorella Mannikin Georgetown racecourse
At least ten birds, including three adults, seen coming down to drink at
water source. Also present were Zebra Finch, Black-throated Finch and a
couple of Masked Finch.

Fri 25 Jul Grey Tattler East Hope Island, near Cooktown
High tide roost on lee shore of a windy day clustered together.
