Hi all,
We went up to Nhill last weekend for our regular mid-winter visit and had
an excellent time including finding Little Friarbirds on the Nhill - Harrow
road.
While we were walking an Australian Raven flew over and just because I had
the camera out I took a couple of photos of it. When I got home I noticed
that the photo showed it had yellow feet. This seemed strange so I checked
my reference books and none of them, including HANZAB mentioned ravens or
crows with yellow feet. I used a magnifying glass on the Simpson and Day
images and it looks like they might shows yellow pads on corvid feet.
I spoke to a friend about this and she checked her images and has sent me
photos of a Torresian Crow and a Little Raven, both with yellow feet. So my
question is, does anyone know if this is an age feature? courtship? sexual
difference? Do Little Crows and Forrest Ravens also have yellow on their
feet some or all of the time?
Possibly I am the only birder who hasn't noticed this colouring on corvids
but I found it a really interesting sighting.
I will put the images on my blog if anyone is curious.
cheers
Jenny
