I am very sad to hear of the recent death of Ken Simpson, on Wed.
9th July. I first met him when we were both a lot younger, at a BOC
study meeting - he was, I think, speaking about petrels and other
sea-birds.
Most of us have a copy of Simpson and Day - mine has been
well-used, and replaced at least once after some watery catastrophe.
I also have "Birds in Bass Strait," an early book produced I think for
BHP. In 1998 he and Zoe Wilson produced "Birdwatching in Australia and
New Zealand" - it's well worth finding a copy if you can.
I always found him very helpful with answers to my queries when I
was a relative beginner, and later, until his birding days were
interrupted by illness.
My sympathies and best wishes to Zoe.
Anthea Fleming
