Numbers appear to be limited. Female not located.

Sooty Tern
Kewarra Beach / Cairns
This Sooty Tern at Kewarra Beach is probably a victim of cyclone Ita. Was found by the beach shivering and hardly alive. Perished a couple of hours later. Pretty well camouflaged amongst the beach debris; stayed undetected on a narrow stretch of beach with scores of dogs passing by.

Great-billed Heron
Smithburne River estuary
Flushed in broad block of mangroves at junction of minor tidal creek with Smithburne River, about 23 km upriver from the sea mouth but only 6 km east of the nearest coast.

Little Egret (possible hybrid with Pied Heron)
Normanton (saltmarsh at Corduroy Crossing)
In saltmarsh near the highway just east of the Norman River bridge, a heron with characteristics of Little Egret and of Pied Heron, feeding among many individuals of both species. Structure was of Little Egret but legs and lower mandible were yellow-green, plumes on hind-crown and mantle were like Pied Heron's, and much of hind-neck and back were dark blue-grey. At the time, many hundreds of both species were nesting in a colony about 20 km distant.

Flock Bronzewing, Black Falcon, Little Curlew, Zitting Cisticola
Karumba Plain
Singles of Flock Bronzewing, Black Falcon and Little Curlew on central or eastern parts of the grass plain traversed by the highway, east of Karumba, on 5 or 6 April. One bird of a pair of Zitting Cisticolas was carrying an object that may have been nest material (see photo).

Blue-faced Honeyeater
Barlow Park, near cnr Scott St & Aumuller Sts, Portsmith. Cairns
single adult Blue-faced Honeyeater dive-bombed a lone dog walker near this intersection - quite an uncommon bird in the Cairns lowlands, although they are an uncommon but regular visitor along the Northern Beaches of Cairns & around Lake Placid/Caravonica area in winter times.

White-breasted Whistler
Karumba Point
Searched the mangroves for the male which we had photographed here in 2007. Found the female instead which was equally rewarding. Such a big and imposing bird; massive beak and a body well in excess of other female whistlers.
