Hi All
Re: Freckled Ducks. Kangaroo Island, SA, is an important refuge for Freckled
Ducks and over the years significant flocks have been observed. The following
records are testament to the importance of KI to this species.
2800 at freshwater Lades Lagoon, July-Dec 1980
33 at Freshwater Grassdale Lagoon, May 1981
500 at brackish paperbark fringed Birchmore Lagoon, Dec 1982
600 at brackish paperbark fringed Murrays Lagoon, Feb 1983
55 at brackish Lake Kitty, June 1985
Records ceased for next 10+ years as I was absent from KI from before 1990
to 2002
311 at Kingscote Sewage Pond Jan 2003
423 at Kingscote Sewage Ponds Feb 2003
1040 at freshwater Duck Lagoon Feb 2003
333 at Murrays Lagoon, April 2003
400 at Duck Lagoon, June 2003
418 at Duck Lagoon, March 2006
130 at Duck Lagoon, Dec 2006
50 Birchmore Lagoon, Jan-Feb 2012

I was over at the Goolwa treatment ponds last Wednesday (24/7) and noticed
about 25 Freckled Ducks. But what was of interest was the large raft of
Pink-eared Ducks numbering ~60 located at the end of the first pond away
from the rest of the ducks. That's the most Pink-eared I have seen at one
time.

So why the sudden increase in numbers? I assume they've bred successfully in
the last couple of years in the good conditions, and that they couldn't for
about ten years before that because of the drought.
What happened before that for them to be scarce for 30 years? Surely there
were good breeding conditions in that time.
