Monday, July 1, 2013 to Sunday, July 7, 2013:

Area: SA

Date: Tuesday, June 18, 2013

Location: 15 Mile track and Walkers Crossing Track. Coordinates for dead bird 
given.

Letter-winged Kite (Elanus scriptus) (2) One bird was seen in  a tree near the 
track heading to Walkers Crossing. The other bird was found dead later the same 
day just off the Track. This one had been presumably hit by something coming 
along the track as there was a lot of damage to it. Photos of both birds 
uploaded.

Date: Saturday, June 29, 2013

Location: Chowilla Station, north of Renmark

Bassian Thrush (Zoothera lunulata) (1) While surveying this Black Box 
(Eucalyptus largiflorens)/mallee/floodplain habitat I came across a Bassian 
Thrush, 300 km out of its normal range. No other records for this species in 
this area according to the 2003 Atlas of Australian Birds. Clear pictures taken.

Location: North Terrace adjacent to Government House

Striated Pardalote (Pardalotus striatus) (1) We have seen occasional striated 
pardalotes near our home in St Peters and in Botanic Park, but never before 
right in the city. It was in an almost leafless elm tree, calling constantly.

Location: Kangaroo Island

Brown Quail (Coturnix ypsilophora) (7) within a drainage line covered with 
rank, dense Phalaris, S side of Bay of Shoals, KI, 1-3 July 2013. First seen 
here ca 4 months ago and only intermittent sightings since. Extremely rare on 
KI.

Double-banded Plover (Charadrius bicinctus) (37) a single flock in a shallow 
brackish swamp well vegetated with low samphire and grasses, Cygnet River, KI, 
3 July 2013. This is the largest flock of this species observed on KI.

Darter (Anhinga novaehollandiae) (1) adult male roosting on dead tree in Middle 
River estuary, KI, 29 June 2013.

Nankeen Night Heron (Nycticorax caledonicus) (1) adult flushed from Melaleuca 
halmaturorum thicket growing alongside Eleanor River, ca 1 km upstream from 
mouth, KI, 27 June 2013. A new site record for this species on KI.

White-bellied Sea-Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster) (1) an adult swooped down and 
snatched dead/dying Black Bream from beach near Harriet River Mouth, Vivonne 
Bay, KI, 30 June 2013.

Spotted Dove (Stigmatopelia chinensis) (2) near two beach shacks at Eleanor 
River Mouth, Vivonne Bay, KI, 27 June 2013. All previous observations at 
Vivonne Bay have been from the small subdivision/settlement further west.

Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus funereus) (ca100) Several 
observations on KI over past two months of winter foraging flocks numbering up 
to 100 birds. Mostly seen across ironstone (lateritic) plateau from Playford 
Highway W of Parndana northwards towards Snellings Beach. Birds are feeding on 
seeds of introduced Monterey Pine (P. radiata) and seeds/wood boring larvae? of 
Silver Banksia (B. marginata); Desert Banksia (B. ornata) and Monkey-nut Hakea 
(H. rostrata).

Fairy Tern (Sterna nereis) (1) flying across sea between Cape du Couedic and 
Inner Casuarina Islet, Flinders Chase NP, KI, 28 June 2013.

Brown Skua (Stercorarius lonnbergi) (2) In Eastern Cove, KI, 30 June 2013. With 
small number of Shy Albatrosses, seemingly feeding on dead and dying cuttlefish 
which seems to be a regular event at this location during winter. PS: The late 
Mr Allen Lashmar netted and banded Procellariiformes in Eastern Cove during 
winter over many years-they were so gorged/heavy with cuttlefish they had 
difficulty taking flight when pursued downwind.

Location: St. Kilda foreshore

Red-necked Stint (Calidris ruficollis) (400) This large over wintering flock 
were feeding along the foreshore with Red-capped Plover on a falling tide close 
to the walk way.

Red-capped Plover (Charadrius ruficapillus) (40) Feeding close in with other 
waders

Curlew Sandpiper (Calidris ferruginea) (14) Feeding in shallow water with other 
waders

Royal Spoonbill (Platalea regia) (160) Huge number resting close to the edge of 
the mangroves. One only Yellow-bill with them.

Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus) (350) This large flock was resting 
in the same area as the Spoonbills. There were many juveniles in the flock.

Location: Brown's Road, Monarto

White-fronted Honeyeater (Phylidonyris albifrons) (3) At least three 
White-fronted Honeyeaters close to main track about 200m NW of the water butt.

Golden Whistler (Pachycephala pectoralis) (1) A male Golden Whistler with full 
black cap and bib and clear white sides of face, chin and throat. Rest of body 
pale grey back and off white underparts, like a rather pale female. The bird 
was colour ringed; red on one leg, yellow the other, but due to windy 
conditions and the fact that the bird was in the top of tall Sheoak it was not 
possible to be certain as to which leg each ring was on! Seen about 20m east of 
water butt.
