Birdline Northern Territory

Published sightings for the week ending 24 Feb 2013.

Sat 23 Feb Nankeen Night-Heron Alice Springs Waste Stabilisation Ponds
Nankeen Night-Heron (1) Adult bird, initially roosting on the southern shore of A6, then attempted to fly to EP10, but was forced down by Black Kites and splash landed in the centre of A6. Last seen roosting in the tall eucalypts along the boundary fence with Ilparpa Swamp.

Fri 22 Feb Nankeen Night Heron Nyirrpi Sewage Ponds
"...as we approached the pond we were stopped in our tracks by a lone Nankeen Night Heron. Never seen one here before. Beautiful and exciting to see."
Chris Watson per Bob Carter

Mon 18 Feb Black-necked Stork Tennant Creek
An unusual sighting of a Black-necked Stork. It was about knee deep in an ephemeral muddy pool, east of town between Kazinsky road and the TV aerials. There were also around 30 Black Kites with it – some of which were sitting chest deep in the water, just keeping their wings out. Not sure what was going on, but maybe they we’re feeding on emerging burrowing frogs?
per Tim Leane

Birdline Northern Territory is hosted by Eremaea Birds.
