Location: Sheoak Beach, Edithburg.
Fairy Tern (Sterna nereis) (14) Fairy Terns resting on sand spit with Crested
Tern, some flyng and fishing.
Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres) (70) Resting on the rocky coast at high
tide.
Grey-tailed Tattler (Heteroscelus brevipes) (1) Resting with two Common
Greenshank.
Lesser Sand Plover (Charadrius mongolus) (1) One found along with 300
Red-necked Stints at high tide.
Pacific Golden Plover (Pluvialis fulva) (1) Resting with the Ruddy Turnstone.
High tide and plenty of waders to be seen. 20 Red-caped Plovers in with the
Red-necked Stints. Low numbers of Cormorants and Terns. Some Whiskered Terns
about. 3 Sooty Oystercatchers

Location: Kangaroo Island
Short-tailed Shearwater (Puffinus tenuirostris) (50000) Estimated over about
three hours of sea watching. Migrating W around Cape duCouedic on SW tip of
Kangaroo Island-moving to breeding islets of S coast of Australia. Close in to
shore in endless stream, pushed in close by massive S blow.
Shy Albatross (Thalassarche cauta) (23) Flying W around Cape duCouedic on SW
tip of Kangaroo Island. Close in to shore, pushed in close by massive S blow.
Black-browed Albatross (Thalassarche melanophris) (2) Flying W around Cape
duCouedic on SW tip of Kangaroo Island. Close in to shore, pushed in close by
massive S blow.
Glossy Black-Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus lathami) (52) Single flock; feeding in
Drooping Sheoaks and roosting in Sugar Gum, gully near Western River Cove.
Brown Quail (Coturnix ypsilophora) (1) First heard by Danny Rogers on 21 Sep
2012 in home garden on W outskirts of Kingscote. Still present on 15 Oct 2012.
This is first confirmed sighting (photographed); last unconfirmed report was in
1994; before that about 1957.
White-naped Honeyeater (Melithreptus lunatus) (6+) At Duck Lagoon on the lower
Cygnet River, 27 September 2012; feeding in river red gums and manna gums.
Breeding confirmed by: (a) nest building; (b) feeding young in nest; (c)
feeding a fledged young.
Red-kneed Dotterel (Erythrogonys cinctus) (4) On a small shallow swamp on inner
parts of Kingscote Racecourse; have been present for about 6 weeks now.
Shallows mostly covered with aquatic vegetation including some samphire.
Uncommon species on KI.
Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) (31) Extraordinary flock of this species
perched on two dead trees in Middle River estuary, 3 October 2012. Mostly seen
in small numbers on high energy S and W coastline.
Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (Calidris acuminata) (40) On a small shallow swamp on
inner parts of Kingscote Racecourse; have been present for about 6 weeks now.
Shallows mostly covered with aquatic vegetation including some samphire.
Uncommon species on KI.
Pallid Cuckoo (Cuculus pallidus) (1) A rare visitor to Kangaroo Island. One
photographed by Nicki Redman at Grahams Quarry area, S shore of Bay Of Shoals,
20 September 2012.

Barn Owl (Tyto alba) (1) Viewed in the trees opposite my house in Fairview Park
just after midday. He was being harassed by about 20 Miners and Magpies. He
hung around for about five minutes and then flew off.

Location: Pondalowie Bay, Innes NP
Fairy Tern (Sterna nereis) (7) Flying, noisy, resting with Silver Gull.
Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) (2) Observed at nest, with nesting material, a few
time flying over inclkuding with fish.
One Osprey also seen each day at or on Chinamans Hat Island.
Eastern Reef Egret (Egretta sacra) (2) Two bird feeding along the waters edge
and some of the time interacting with each other in courtship style.
Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres) (1) Only one bird to be seen and he seemed
to be injured but feeding well.
Rock Parrot (Neophema petrophila) (18) Birds hard to find as they were feeding
on low vegetation that was just going to seed.
Hooded Plover (Thinornis rubricollis) (2) One pair found in a small bay. Nest
with 2 eggs found, they will start brooding when the third egg is laid. Watched
them give a Silver Gull a good send off when he went too close to the eggs.
This was a Fleurieu Birdwatchers Camp outing with 30 birders who dispersed
quiet well at this location. Other birds seen at Pondalowie included Red-necked
stints, Chestnut Teal, Red-caped plovers nesting, White-faced Heron, Sooty
Oystercatcher and Masked lapwing with dependants.
Total bird count for Innes NP was 78. Very few Honeyeaters to be seen.

Grey Plover (Pluvialis squatarola) (12) feeding and roosting on exposed tidal
flats at Cape Rouge, Bay of Shoals, 2 September 2012. Most showing quite
considerable breeding dress.
Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) (2) feeding in paddock with water buffalos at
Parndana Wildlife Park during Late August and all of September 2012.
White-necked Heron (Ardea pacifica) (1) Rare visitor to KI; one on dam at
Lathami CP, several km S of Stokes Bay, 21 September 2012.
Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) (3) a pair feeding in shallows at Bay of
Shoals; one feeding in Cygnet River estuary; all three during afternoon of 15
September 2012.
Great Egret (Casmerodius albus) (2) Two roosting on mud flat at American River,
3 October 2012; one feeding at Cygnet River estuary, 15 September 2012.
White-faced Storm-Petrel (Pelagodroma marina) (1) Fresh beach-derelict, Vivonne
Bay, 7 October 2012. Collected for SAM.
Hardhead (Aythya australis) (55) Kingscote sewage ponds, 15 September 2012.
White-bellied Sea-Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster) (1) swooping over waterfowl at
Duck Lagoon, 27 September 2012

Eastern Koel (Eudynamys orientalis) (1) For the third consecutive year, this
bird has appeared at the same address! Last year its stay was short-term. It
arrived again on 02/10/12, according to the residents (who have taken an
interest in this bird) but, unlike previous years, is either not calling in the
morning, or is not present.

Australian Ringneck (Barnardius zonarius) (2) An unusual sighting in this
