Birdline Tasmania

Published sightings for the week ending 18 Sep 2011.

Mon 12 Sep Hardhead (400+), Hoary-headed Grebe (200+) Lake Dulverton
Also at Lake Dulverton today, a conservative estimate of 400 Hardheads, with a raft of at least 350 birds on the bottom lake plus up to 100 birds on the top lake. Hoary-headed Grebes were abundant as well, congregating in groups of up to 50 birds, mainly on the bottom lake. Two Great Crested Grebes looked like they may have been pairing up on the bottom lake as well; I understand they haven't bred here for years. Water levels are very high.

Wandering Whistling-duck Lake Dulverton
Confirming Ian Lundy's report from yesterday of three Wandering Whistling-ducks at Lake Dulverton. The birds were on the first dam wall when I arrived 8.20 and were still there when I left a bit after 10am. The closest captive population I know of is the Melbourne Zoo (although I think they're free range) but the birds seemed very wary of approach even at a distance so they could be wild.
