Birdline South Australia

Published sightings for the week ending 18 Sep 2011.

Thu 15 Sep Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater (Acanthagenys rufogularis) Dublin Township
Two astounding observations of Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters swooping on and chasing a wild rabbit around my back garden! The first one was about a month ago in the middle of the afternoon; I watched as a Spiney Cheek swooped down and chased a wild, fully grown rabbit 3 or 4 times around my rear garden. This morning (about 9am) two Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters, in perfect unison, swooped down from an Eremophila and chased a totally intimidated, full grown rabbit across the back garden, again having several goes at him until it found the safety of shrubs along the back fenceline. A second rabbit near where the first got swooped cowered quietly as the birds chased the other one around, and didn't move a muscle until it was finally safe to head for the safety of the shrubs at the rear too. Totally amazing. I assume it's a territorial thing for the Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters? How did I get so lucky as to see that, twice!

Brown Quail (2), Horsfields Bronze-Cuckoo (6), Crested Shrike-tit (2), Diamond Firetail (2) Altona Landcare Reserve
Altona is proving a magnet for different species of Quail at the moment! After getting excellent views of a pair of Painted Button-Quails a few weeks ago, today it was a pair of Brown Quail! These two were calling in some low, regenerating (after fire) growth. Imitating their call, both birds approached to about 2m away but stuck fairly close to cover. Good views were obtained but poor photographs, as they are pretty quick! Horsfields Bronze-Cuckoo's are also here in force at the moment, with 6 different birds either seen or heard throughout the reserve. Crested Shrike-tits were in their usual area in middle of reserve and a pair of Diamond Firetails near the entrance.
