Birdline Australia

Published sightings for the week ending 7 Aug 2011.

Sun 7 Aug Arctic Tern Hillarys Boat Harbour , Western Australia
Further to yesterday's posting, Jeff Davies has kindly looked at a few photos of the bird and confirmed that the bird is an Arctic Tern (1st summer), so this may be a good chance to see this species, which is a rare visitor to the Perth coast. It's possible that it arrived during the bout of strong westerlies that blew through late last week, over last weekend and into the start of this week.

Sat 6 Aug Commic Tern Hillarys Boat Harbour, Perth, Western Australia
A "commic" tern has been present the last few days at Hillarys Boat Harbour in Perth, and was still showing well this morning flying around the marina and also perched on a jetty with Crested Terns. The best area to look for it is from along the southern harbour wall/groyne. Park near AQWA (the Aquarium of WA) and walk out along the groyne until you reach the outer harbour - the bird often flies along the rock walls here, and sometimes rests with the Crested Terns. The bird was first seen on Thursday by Michael Hancock, then again on Friday morning by Ted & Maureen Cawley, and subsequently by others on Friday afternoon and this morning. The ID is still not settled, but Arctic Tern is probably the favourite at this stage

12 Star Finches seen at a waterhole near the Karumba dumpsite over an hour between 4.30 and 5.30 pm. Two adults birds (one with four juveniles still being fed) and one single subadult (with red beak and tail but not yet developed spots) and a group of five subadults (various beak colour stages but no spots). Also watering at the same place were Zebra Finches and Double-barred Finches. A Buff-banded Rail came in to drink as well. Star Finches sparse in Queensland and good to see evidence of current breeding success.
