Frank,
Like Alastair I have a household contents policy with AAMI and utilize their "extra cover for portable valuables". You simply nominate items ( Leica bins & Kowa scope & Manfrotto tripod in my case), assign an insured value, and pay an extra premium (not as much as you'd expect). You then have cover for any event anywhere in Australia (and o'seas I'm pretty sure).
So far haven't had to test this coverage.
