The following is a digest of Sightings Reported on Birdpedia for the period
Monday, November 8, 2010 to Sunday, November 14, 2010:
Area: SA
Date: Sunday, November 7, 2010
Location: Old Nursery, Black Hill CP, Addison Ave
Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) (2) Two birds flushed from feeding on the
ground, settling low in a tree a short distance away. One a juvenile (possibly
male) the other a male (both were pale green, not bright). They were extremely
approachable suggesting aviary escapes.
Enter the nursery at the gate and look around the area near the building.
An echidna was also observed feeding. It was located when we went to
investigate snorting noises coming from a grassy area. It was moving along the
ground, putting its noise into everthing and blowing air out through its snout.
It eventually made its way to the paths and began hunting for ants amongst the
sleepers that line the paths. It found a large nest and was happily feeding
away when several large ants (1 - 1.5 in) attacked it. They appeared to be
going for its eyes. Anyway it got quite aggitated as it tried to remove then,
running along the path and rubbing its face on the ground to remove them. Being
successful it continued feeding. It totally ignored us as we observed for about
15 minutes from only a few feet away.

Date: Wednesday, November 10, 2010
Location: Murray River, Big Bend on Private Property
Crested Shrike-tit (Falcunculus frontatus) (1) Was spotted high in the foliage
with it's distinctive black eye stripe and crest, it swung down to the main
trunk ripping of a piece of bark, went back high into the foliage and proceeded
to tear at the piece of bark possibly eating whatever was underneath it.
Sighted it twice over the week.
Sacred Kingfisher (Todiramphus sanctus) (1) It practically spent the whole camp
trip with us, sitting in a particular few trees diving down catching
cockroaches (as they were everywhere and big ones) and merrily munching on them
day after day. Unknowingly even brought home a few cockies #*
Nankeen Kestrel (Falco cenchroides) (1) Have been camping here for a few years
now and this is the first time that I have spotted a Nankeen Kestrel flying
over the cliffs in this area.
Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater (Acanthagenys rufogularis) (1) Just in abundance in
our camp area.
In 7 days close to 40 species of bird recorded in an area 40m wide, cliffs on
one side Murray on the other and nearly 1000m long. It's on family owned
private property. A good birdo could probably double that, as there were quite
a few calls that were unfamiliar to me and also calls that i recognised but
could not find.
