Just a comment on Colin's mention of Bundaberg/Wide Bay's BirdAlert if I
may.
Our little email BirdAlert group also shares small file photos in the body
of emails. Of course, links can be attached to Birding-Aus postings but our
members like opening an email with the pic right there. We have many members
now that have a more general interest also mainly because of Jack's amazing
desire to absorb information on many other critters. So, even though it is
BirdAlert, we regularly get interesting postings of dragonflies,
butterflies, herps and mammals. The other interesting thing is that people
with a connection to our area, some even having lived here previously, have
joined and contributed.
Also, regarding our Buff-breasted Sandpiper (which incidentally was far more
co-operative than the recent WA one because it stayed for a few months!),
was promptly posted on both Birding-Aus (by Chris Barnes) and ,of course,
also BirdAlert. So we would always do that for rarities. There is nothing
more satisfying than sharing great birds with other like-minded souls where
possible!
If you want to join our BirdAlert you can subscribe on Deane Lewis' great
site at www.mywidebay.com. But most relates to this part of Queensland.
Our BirdAlert doesn't conflict with any other methods of getting info out
there. Likewise, Simon and Chris' alert system would simply add to the
mosaic of electronic options available.
Cheers,
Bill
PS If anyone finds a beach-washed Fiordland Penguin, please let me know
before it is taken into care...I still need it on my Aust list
