Published sightings for the week ending 25 Jul 2010.

Thu 22 Jul Spotted Nightjar Tyto Wetlands
Spotted Nightjar flushed from grass fire track southwest corner 1pm
today. Presumed bird flushed Sunday evening. Rarely seen in Tyto. Also
today, pair Large-tailed Nightjars, Black Monarch, Rufous Fantail: all
in grove near SW footbridge.

Sun 18 Jul Spotted Whistling-Duck Wenlock River (near Weipa)
A single adult, presumably female with a very young chick found in a
landlocked lagoon near the Wenlock River on 18 July 2010. They were
resting along the bank for a while then ventured into the water where
they began feeding on the lilly flowers. I have come across SWD in the
past with chicks, but a few years ago and the deatils are now sketchy.
The birding atlas I have doesn't show any July breeding records.

Budgerigar Townsville Town Common Conservation Park
Not often seen on the coast. This one observed for five minutes near the
Jacana hide; first that I have seen on 'The Common' since May 2009.

Sat 17 Jul Red-necked Crake, Little Kingfisher Centenary Lakes,
Cairns city
A very successful morning's birding here today turned up 3 Red-necked
Crakes, all seen well from a few metres. A single Little Kingfisher was
hunting at the freshwater lake's edge out in the open (see rough pic
attached). Other good birds here were Cicadabird, Pacific Baza, a
courting Collared Kingfisher pair, Lovely Fairy-wrens, and a pair of
Papuan Frogmouths roosting 2 metres above the ground at the exact spot I
found them last week. (Moderators Note:Desirable species that most
visitors are looking for when visiting area)

Thu 15 Jul Channel-billed Cuckoo Gregory River at Gregory Downs
A pair or more of Channel-billed Cuckoos up and down the river in front
of our camp on river- I thought they went north to PNG during winter.
Also parties of Purple-crowned Fairy-wrens within metres of our caravan.

Wed 14 Jul Red-bellied Pitta Chilli Beach / Portland Roads (Iron
Range National Park
A rare sighting for this time of year, a Red Bellied Pitta seen on 14
July 2010 whilst spot lighting at about 10pm at the last rainforest
stretch on the way to the Chilli Beach / Portland Roads intersection.
Excellent views were had and a few photos taken before it flew off into
the bush. Also found the same night was a single Red backed Button
quail, also on the road.
