Location: West Beach Foreshore
Australasian Gannet (Morus serrator) (2) Two Gannets seen circling and moving
slowly south a few hundred meters offshore.
Also, two shearwaters seen heading north same distance out flying very low.
Appeared dark underneath, larger, and alternately gliding and flapping.
Possibly Fleshy-footed Shearwaters.
Could be more seabirds heading north on the south-westerly change due overnight.
Additional note: See next sighting 04/05/10 - many Short-tailed Shearwaters.

Date: Tuesday, May 4, 2010
Location: West Beach foreshore and Henley jetty.
Short-tailed Shearwater (Puffinus tenuirostris) (500+) Hundreds, possibly
thousands of birds streaming south, some close inshore. Went to end of Henley
jetty just as the last two in-shore birds flew past: only a few stragglers
further out after that!
A small number of Gannets further out.

Location: Middle Creek,Strathalbyn
Black-chinned Honeyeater (Melithreptus gularis) (2+) At least 2 individuals
feeding in the crowns of Sugar and River Red Gums growing along Middle Creek in
the same general area as previously reported.
Black Falcon (Falco subniger) (1) Observed in aerial combat with a Peregrine
Falcon above Braemar Drive.After a while both birds drifted towards the
south,still clashing and stooping on each other as they disappeared from view.
Crested Shrike-tit (Falcunculus frontatus) (1) A single bird feeding in a patch
of Silver Birch growing in the creek.

Date: Sunday, May 9, 2010
Location: Altona CSR Landcare Reserve
Fan-tailed Cuckoo (Cacomantis flabelliformis) (1) Saw a solitary bird perched
on a dead branch high in a tree calling for about a minute. Managed to get good
views from about 20 meters away. Would have also made a good photo if I hadn't
left my camera with my wife and new born child 400m away!
