Personally I wouldn't read to much into Dr Karl's claims, he is not an ornithologist, and he is the business of sounding like he knows what he is doing. Every time I hear him make a claim on a field related to a subject I know well, he is usually wrong in some way. My friends who are doctors say the same about his claims on medicine, apparently (allegedly?) sometimes he has been dangerously wrong on medical subjects. I'm sure the guy is smart, but reading a few books doesn't make him an expert in every field, and no doubt the Internet is a source for much of his information, and that is of course notoriously unreliable.
