Tony,
I call them mites but chiggers are mites. they come in a variety of species and distributions. there habits a affects are also variable.

Mabi forest on the Atherton Tablelands is noted for the scrub itch which results from their attack. Do not sit on rotting logs. In the North Johnstone River gorge country there is a burrowing mite which does not itch until the young ones are ready to hatch from under your skin. A little pustule will develop about ten days after you hae been in the 'right' area.
