Hi Albert,

Good point. I had forgotten about the Golden Cat. Looking at the video a couple of more times, the leg/body/tail ratios do look more like that of a Golden Cat, than a Leopard. Seeing one of them and melanistic as well is an even better sighting than a Leopard. I still would not like to meet one on a trail, though they are pretty timid. Do you think that there have been more sightings of the larger felines in Malaysia lately.

Cheers,

Carl Clifford

Hi all,
Having been there several times in the past, I do not doubt the story of tigers in the region but I would advise that the feline in the video be taken with a pinch of salt. I personally believe that the feline is too small (compared to the Wild Boar it is even smaller) and slightly built to be a Panther, but instead could be a melanistic Asian Golden Cat, which is not uncommon in the Main Range of Penisular Malaysia. Some comments on the blog have echoed this sentiment. A good find nonetheless.

Apologises for Off-Topic.

Dear All,

Anyone who might be considering a trip to Fraser's Hill, Malaysia, for a spot of birding, may be interested in a couple of unusual wildlife sightings recently. A melanistic Leopard and a Tigress with cubs have recently been seen on the lower sections of the new road. A report can be seen at http://leekeenseong.blogspot.com/2009/09/birding-at-frasers-hill.html .

It might be best to go birding with someone who can't run as fast as you.

Cheers,

Carl Clifford
