Here is a nice review paper which discusses female birds developing male plumage when oestrogen production is impaired: http://tinyurl.com/c5u943 It includes a mention of the impact of peahen which developed a train in later life on Darwin's theory about sexual selection. Its not the chromosomes buts its fascinating observation & topic. Andrew |
