The phenomenon of females taking on male characteristics is very well known
in domestic fowl (chooks for us laymen). Old hens will even start crowing,
albeit not very convincingly, and have been known to mount other hens. It
happens a lot in older hens but has been reported for younger birds with
diseased ovaries.
