"..it may be due to the degeneration of the gonads which change the
chromosomes from XX to XY and therefore the bird begins to assume male
characteristics. This apparently occurs in the domestic fowl. Does anyone
know if this is true?"
I am interested if this is the case but there may be another explanation in the change in hormone production. CV the feminisation of older males and the growth of body and facial hair in females of the species Homo.
