Lawrie,

Right on both counts. According to Simba Chan from Birdlife Asia, they were indeed Simba Derr and the "Condors" were Cinereous Vulture, which around the Beijing area would be quite rare.

As for the condors ... maybe one of the eagles Carl suggested, or maybe
vultures (eg. Cinereous or Eurasian Black Vulture *Aegypius monachus*)
ganging up on poor little bambi!!  :-)
