Duck Hunting

I know that a number of people would like to write to the responsible
minister to express their disgust. Following is an email that I sent to John
Brumby (Premier of Victoria) and Gavin Jennings (Victorian Minster for the
Environment). I also sent an email to Peter Garrett (Federal Minister for
the Environment) asking if he can intervene.

The following are the email addresses that I have:

And:

My understanding is that Gavin Jennings is personally opposed to duck
hunting, but John Brumby forced the decision in spite of advice from DSE and
independent advisors. Apparently there are political favours to be paid for.
Peter Garrett is the Federal Minister for the Environment, of course, and
has no direct say in state policies. He can, however, exert influence.

If you are anti-duck hunting, please write to the Ministers, the Premier,
your local members, both state and federal, and anyone and everyone else.

There is no point in abusing hunters or hunt organisations. They are, for
the most part, acting within the law. It is important that the law itself is
changed, and the only people that can do this are the politicians.

Dear Premier Brumby and Minister Jennings,

I cannot express adequately my anger at your decision to allow a duck
hunting season in Victoria this year.

We are in the middle of the worst drought ever recorded in our State. We are
undergoing a period of climate change, if not global warming, that clearly
has effects that can't yet be predicted.

Our native habitat is under threat. Our wildlife is also under threat. Why,
oh why would you imagine that a sensible thing to do is to allow people with
guns to blast our native waterfowl out of the air under any conditions, let
alone the conditions we are currently experiencing.

Please can you explain this decision to me? I am unable to explain to people
that come to me for answers. All I can do is shrug my shoulders and say, "I
don't know."

You have turned me into an activist, and I will not let this subject go now.
I intend to stop this bloodthirsty and totally unnecessary "sport".

As a lifelong ALP supporter, I feel betrayed. You have sold us out to a
bunch of hooligans with guns in exchange for the promise of some country
votes.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for all your efforts in such a good cause. I wrote to DSE expressing
my disgust at the way the government had gone wishy washy over this (strong
gun lobby behind it, I suspect) but I only got a "we thank and take note of
your thoughts" sort of reply. But I do feel that the more people who
express their opposition to this the more notice the government will take.
I am unfortunately too old to do anything physical like you but will
continue to press them by email.

Thanks,

Fiona
