This is interesting as before Christmas I photographed at Lake Wendouree (
on the little bit of swamp left near the tea-house) a mixed species duck
family; male wood duck, pacific black duck and small ducklings. I assumed
that the two species were too separated to breed and that the wood duck had
somehow paired with a black duck that had mated with another black duck.
It was a very cohesive family, the ducklings seemed as attached to the wood
duck as to the black duck. The male wood duck was agressively seeing off
coots and moorhens and was especially aggressive towards any black duck that
approached the group. Eventually the adults led the ducklings down a stone
wall and into the reeds on the bed of Lake Wedouree proper. I have lots of
photos, I'll have another look at the ducklings but they looked like little
black ducks.
Can these species hypridise?

An apparent female Australian Wood Duck / Pacific Black Duck Cross was
sighted and photographed by Penne Carr at Mitta Mitta, north-east Victoria.
The bird clearly showed the dark crown, black streak through the eye and the
whitish face.
