Spent a couple of hours in the area on Sun 21 Dec from 8.45am, which
yesterday was a showcase of Sydney summer migrants, including: vocal
Koels, Channel-billed Cuckoos, and a Golden-bronze Cuckoo; Dollarbirds
in good numbers and a pair feeding noisy young in a Swamp Mahogany
hollow; Sacred Kingfisher also common and feeding young in a termite
nest hollow; Rufous Fantail pair near the waterfall; 3 parties of
White-throated Needletails of 8, 5 and 7 birds respectively (seen
approx 30 mins apart but very possibly same birds staying in area).
Others with fledgelings included Spotted Pardalote, Brown Gerygone,
Eastern Whipbird, Laughing Kookaburra, Black Duck, Dusky Moorhen, Willie
Wags.
Highlight was a superb white phase Grey Goshawk being mobbed by magpies
over the wetland swamp oaks.
Another birder I ran into had seen Tawny Grassbird earlier.
Ran out of time to go looking for the Middle Creek Red-chested Button
Quail - wonder if anyone saw it on the weekend?
Cheers,
Eric
