Hi Rob,

There is a heap of information in the B-Aus archives on this subject. A few
brief notes relevant to your email:

If you want really top-quality binoculars that give you a good image you
*have* to spend a lot of money. Anything less will be a compromise.
However, there are some good mid-range binoculars out there. I like my
Nikon Monarch 10x42, though I dropped them a while back and the eye cup came
off. They're in getting fixed now. The cost me about $600 brand new though
I think the price has come down since. If you search the archives there
should be a whole list of similar mid-range binoculars with an assessment of
quality.

Try and get into a store that has a few different brands you can try out.
Try the Leica, Swarovski or Zeiss binoculars at your peril though, as they
cost about $2500-$3000 and they are so good you might be tempted.

Regards,
Chris
