Sounds like the mating call of a lesser drop-bear to me.

Subject: RFI bird ID (Vict.)
Importance: High
Interested in people's thoughts on an unidentified animal (bird?) I
heard
in north east Victoria recently. Details are:
Location: approx. 30km south of Euroa (near Ruffy) in the Strathbogie
Ranges.
Habitat: quiet (ie. away from traffic etc) farmland with roadside and
paddock trees verging onto dry eucalypt forest. About 400m in altitude.
Date: 1 Nov 2008
Time: about 2 am in the morning (quite dark!)
Sound heard
Best described as like two (thin) sticks being hit together (a bit like
people fencing). The sound took just a few seconds and was followed by
a
cat-like miaow call. Not sure whether this was the same creature.
Comment
I've been recording fauna on this bush block for some years and often
get
Boobooks, Koalas and possibly nightjars. The sounds I heard could not
be
precisely matched with either the Spotted or White-throated nightjars so
I
was wondering if there are regional variations in calls of either of
these
species.
Any advice most welcome ...
cheers, Martin
