Yesterday during my lunch hour I visited Herdsman Lake - my favourite
birding spot and only a 3 minute drive from work.
In that hour I managed to see all ten species of duck you're likely to see
on Herdsman, among them a lone female Freckled Duck trying to be
inconspicous, loafing among a bunch of Pacific Black Ducks near the carpark.
After work I returned to the lake to explore another area and spotted a
Cattle Egret on a small wetland beside the lake. During a BAWA walk in
early August a Cattle Egret was seen in the same area so I can only assume
this is the same bird who has settled in. Black-winged Stilts were also on
this wetland - the first time I have seen stilts at Herdsman in a year or
so - it has had A LOT of water in it this year.
