I tried J-bird, a free one. It was ok, but didn't come with a C&B list, so I spent a lot of time getting it going. Now I use Eremaea, a free online database. That has the advantage that they look after taxonomy changes and backups, and my data is available to others. You can submit your data from there to the BA Atlas.
