Hi all,

Have just had a discussion re effects of playback with a colleague and they
suggested a different approach to studying this. There is work being done
at the moment measuring the stress of disturbance on birds via testing
physiological response chemicals in blood (adrenocorticosteroids), and body
condition. This could easily be adapted with the right experimental design
to look at playback effects. It could also be done on birds in captivity
first to see if there is a good response in songbirds before taking it into
the field, which would help sort out the type of signal you are looking for
and how strong it is likely to be (and therefore how many birds you would
need to catch to be sure of your results).
