I've received an off-line suggestion from a birding wag with public standards that the proper phrase for a birding forum is "have your crake and eat it too".

In the interests of harmonising birding and culinary terms, I will rephrase my assertion to "There's no reason why you can't have your Spotted Crake and eat it too."

Not only do you educate people about alt names that they may come across in conversations with non-birders, but you also keep the C&B police happy.

Regards, Laurie.

I can only agree with you.

i agree that butter bum is fine in a conversation between friends or associates but to use it in any place or forum where there iare probably others not familiar with your slang terms is somewhere between inconsiderate and lazy.
