I wonder if your Buff-banded Rail came to Sydney on the bumper-bar of a car? Quite a few dead birds picked up in city streets have this sort of history - I once found a dead male Red-capped Robin in Greville Street Prahran (inner-suburb Melbourne) - near Andrew Isles shop actually. It was with a lot of long grass which had apparently been brushed off a car's radiator and bumper. Unfortunately it was a hot day and the bird was quite 'high', so no use for Museum. Of course Rails do turn up in odd places, having apparently got tired when flying and just landed where they were - a friend had one for two days in a suburban garden in Canterbury. I don't think Martin Place was a good landing area - could it have flown into a window?

This morning on the way to work I found a deceased Buff-banded Rail in
Martin Place (between the ANZ Bank and Henry Davis York, for those who know
the area).

The corpse is in very good condition, has no stiffening and shows no obvious
signs of disease or injury to my untrained eye.

I will deliver it to the Australian Museum this morning.
