I think someone else mentioned this, but I ALWAYS pay for my car rentals
with my American Express card simply because it covers the excess. I do not
use the excess reduction from the rental car companies because it adds a
ridiculous amount per day. I use Hertz generally - I'm unsure what their
excess is on 4WDs (I couldn't see on the web site). The only disadvantage to
using a credit card or travel insurance company to cover the excess is that
the rental car company will immediately take the excess from your credit
card, and it may take some weeks or months before the insurance company
reimburses you.
On the occasions that I do get travel insurance for Australian trips, I
always use RACV. They tend to be reasonably competitive, and being a
reasonably reputable company (I think!) I feel that I would have some hope
of getting paid in the event of a claim. Whoever you use, you should read
the fine print in the policy.

Subject: Re: Travel insurance - non birding (sort of..)
I'm trying to avoid paying an exorbitant daily rate (for excess insurance)
to a car hire firm.
This is compounded by the fact that the excess on a 4WD is $7500, while the
standard excess is 2500 - 4000, which seems to be what most travel insurance
policies cover.
It must be possible.......mustn't it?
Cheers
