The main pond (southern platform) is just a shrinking puddle. The Spotless
Crakes are still using it but are very flighty now that they're feeding so far
from the reeds. I haven't stopped there long enough to see a Lewin's lately and
they may no longer be using that part (can anyone cofirm?).
There's still a bit of water and Lewin's and Spotless Crakes at the northern
platform, both easily seen in minutes last night, but I'm wondering if they'll
all have to move on before the forecast rain next week. It could be that there
are more puddles that can't be seen in the reeds.
Since I put up the shadecloth there I've found that any Lewin's feeding close
to the platform will hear you approaching and will hide rather than flee. They
start moving again after a few minutes if you're quiet.
Location: Melway ref 54 C10, behind Mt St Joseph Girls' College in Altona,
north of the railway line.
