Check to see whether the bird has a white rump. Swamp a white rump, Spotted does not.

Harriers generally tootle along a couple of metres above the ground, so it is quite feasible to look for this.

Apart from colour up close, are there any reliable distinguishing features that we can look for? glimpses are often at a distance, and are brief.



Also saw red-brow and double-barred finches here in the neighbourhood this
morning - first time for double-bars here.
