Dog owners also have the numbers on the ground.  Look around any park,
beach, etc, and count the people birding.  I try to make a point of
wearing my binoculars on the way in and out so people see me (they
probably think "wow, how cool") but I'm still generally the only one
there.

I guess even when there's a group of us we aren't that conspicuous.
Perhaps if we ran around madly with our tongues hanging out and barking
we'd get more attention.  I guess that happens sometimes - depends on
the bird.
