David, just for interest, exactly which model was it?  And I assume you mean 8x 
not 4x?

I've always assumed that the greatest variation in price here is with low end 
models. It seems that retailers bet that people won't bother shopping around in 
that price range and sometimes charge ridiculous prices.

I feel that it's necessary to ring around for comparitive prices, not just to 
see if anyone's cheaper but to check whether the shop I'm in is charging an 
anomolously high price.

The situation is even worse with odd items like monoculars where most shops 
only carry a selection of no-name brands and comparison is impossible.
