Yep, there is nothing like off-site storage. I back up to The Apple site in the US (10 G - more than I am likely to use), to a external hard drive which is kept in another building and to a DVD-RWs which is kept in a safe deposit box at my bank. Nothing like belt and braces when it comes to back up.

Agree totally - most reputable web hosts are far safer than your own PC - how many people take regular backups of their PC data - and how many test those backups and store them "off site"? I personally use my own database which I back up regularly to an external disk which is kept in a "safe" place and use a web-based backup service ( www.mozy.com) for added security - can thoroughly recommend Mozy to anyone (if you want to use it ask me and I will refer you then I get more free storage space!)

Storage and Backup
The Eremaea Birds database is stored on a computer maintained by WebCentral, an internet service provider. WebCentral make backup copies of the database several times daily.

You Can Backup Your Own Data
Eremaea Birds provides an Export option that enables you to download some or all of your survey data to your own PC. This data is downloaded as a comma-separated value (CSV) file. In this format, your data can be easily imported into any database or spreadsheet program either for backup purposes or for further processing.

What Happens To My Data If Eremaea Folds?
In the event of Eremaea Birds going out of business, you will be given the opportunity to obtain a copy of your survey data as a CSV file. In addition, the entire database will be archived with the Bird Observers Club of Australia to use for wildlife conservation purposes.

I tested the Export option, and the resulting file looks like it could fairly easily be used to import into other programs, and can be read by eye if necessary.

Eremaea would be a pest to use if you didn't have easy internet access, but apart from that I figure it's probably safer with them than on my own computer.

I have thought of using Eremea, but I am a bit reluctant to place all
my data in a database which I have no control of backing-up off the
data. Does Eremea have a good back-up of the data held on it off-
site, or is it possible to back-up your data held on Eremea your self
for your own archiving?
