Peter,
The lack of a hot shoe in a digital camera does not exclude the use  
of an external flash. I use a Digi-Slave flash (Deluxe 3000) with my  
Olympus SP-550UZ (7.1 Mp 18X zoom) with great results. The Digislave  
DEluxe 3000 has a guide number of 110 which is more than adequate for  
my usage and can also be used with a Flash Extender to take advantage  
of the long zoom of many consumer digital cameras.
