Going from "some beautifully varied notes, as soft as those of an
octave flute, although their common chirp was harsh and dissonant" I would suggest one of the honeyeater species. A species of honeyeater which is "about the size of a thrush" and can have a "varying tint of the Riflebird about the head" is an adult Little Friarbird which has a glossy blue-black facial mask.
I suggest Mitchell saw an adult and a juvenile Little Friarbird.
