I only get out occasionally due to family and work commitments, but my suggestion for a weekend in Melbourne would be:

Melbourne Zoo. Brilliant aviary with selection of australian birds (ok they are in captivity, but it is a great zoo)

Bus to Dights Falls on the Yarra. You will see Egrets, Cormorants, Swamp fowl, Rainbow lorikeets and other parrots, thornbills, honeyeaters, grey shrike-thrush, black faced cuckoo-shrike, etc. The area is famous for the bell miners and willy wagtails.

Botanical gardens.

Flagstaff garden has reportedly a powerful owl spotted at dusk.

If you can hire a car, then you could try:

Point Cook for waders, whistling kite, singing honeyeater etc.

Organ pipe national park. Beautiful spot. Little eagles, firetail finches etc.

Check out Parks Victoria website for more information and some downloadable info sheets
