I think Mike should be congratulated for putting his hand up to an ID error
in such a forthright and public manner. It is very encouraging for
inexperienced or new birders to know that ALL birders make mistakes
sometimes. The top NZ birder recently did exactly the same thing. In my
experience, people who think they are rather better than they really are,
are far less likely to admit their mistakes.
So well done Mike! (and they were SO obviously Whiskered Terns when armed
with the correct ID)

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the rundown on the ID process. I noticed that you say it's
unusual for Whiskered Terns to be in Victoria in winter. There was at least
one overwintering this year at the Western Treatment Plant, which I saw on
at least two occasions. It was in non-breeding plumage.
Regards,
Chris
