Philip's comments are spot on. It would be an excellent idea if a formula (for Sharing of responsibilities, finances ,publications etc.) were devised to combine all birding groups in Australia but unfortunately some hang overs from federation still exist.

Both BOCA and BA are administered from Melbourne and certain people in other parts of Australia simply don't trust them. Illogical I know but give it another 100 years and people may be over that sort of idea.

The other and greater problem is that many people in all groups don't want to combine for various reasons. They would loose their independence, power base, etc.

I once put it to certain officials of BA that they should be working towards this and received the reply that "its too hard."

In short they were not interested.
