No Syd it's not forlorn. In my work which has me in various types of forest,
including rainforest, and needing GPS reception. I use a high gain external
antenna on my Garmin 60CS. I bought the antenna on ebay and see that there
are plenty available. I have a small galvanised steel plate stitched to the
high point of my backpack and attach the magnetic antenna there. Most of the
time I have good to reasonable reception.

I've read of some field workers attaching the antenna to a plate on their
cap.

Cheers

Colin Driscoll

Forlorn hope, I guess, but has there been any change in the situation that
there isn't any unit that will work reliably from beneath the canopy of a
subtropical rainforest?
